Making a Positive First Impression

by E. René Hart, CPRW

In many instances, you have just one opportunity to give your prospective employer that vital first impression. In fact, the experts say that if your resume materials don't capture the reader's attention within the first 15 seconds, then it's unlikely that the rest of your qualifications will even be considered. The materials you select to represent you in your personal marketing campaign must reflect professionalism at every turn.

Layout/Design - Your materials should be typeset so the reader can quickly grasp the highlights you're trying to project. Conservatively use boldface and italics to emphasize headings; leave adequate margins around the edge of the page; and select a typeface which is pleasing to the eye.

Paper Selection - Prospective employers tend to be conservative; however, that doesn't mean you have to choose white bond paper for your materials. A number of acceptable paper selections exist in shades varying from white to cream to light green.

Mailing - While either approach is acceptable, many job seekers choose to mail their resume materials instead of delivering them personally. If you're responding to an advertisement or job posting, you should do so immediately after you see it. Mail your materials flat, either in a white or manila envelope, with a typewritten address label.

Personal Image - Don't forget to evaluate the image you project -- your manner of speech, style of dress, and attitude speak volumes! Consider consulting an image consultant if you feel your image could use polishing!
